THE SCHOLA MEDICA SALERNITANA AND THE GARDENS

The School is the oldest and most revered medical institution in the western world. What is certain is that its roots can be traced back to the school of philosophy founded by the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras in Crotone in the 6th century B.C. The Crotone school of philosophy promoted holistic medicine, according to which the human body was considered in its entirety as a microcosm within the macrocosm that is nature. Women played an integral role in the academic life of the Schola, practicing and writing treatises on medicine. Visit the wonderful Minerva’s Garden, the world’s oldest botanical garden, a hortus sanitatis in the grounds of the Schola. Private escorted walk.
